This groundbreaking “choreopoem” is a spellbinding collection of vivid prose and free verse narratives about and performed by Black women. Capturing the brutal, tender and dramatic lives of contemporary Black women,

For Colored Girls… offers a transformative, riveting evening of provocative dance, music and poetry. Premiered by the Henry Street Settlement, Joseph Papp’s Public Theatre and later on Broadway. “A poignant, gripping, angry and beautiful work.”-Time

Guest directing the play is Yolanda Williams, theatre faculty member at Jackson State University and Tulane University Madison campus. Williams says of the play, “Our production focuses on the transitions we as African American women go through in our lifetime, and the toil it takes on our mind, body, hearts and soul. This is our outlet so the world can get a glimpse of what we hold inside…are joy and our pain, our happiness and our sorrow.”

The cast features Lashunda Thomas (Jackson) as Lady in Red, Japonica Brown (Mobile, AL) as Lady in Purple, Nakia Lawrence (McDonough, GA) as Lady in Blue, Jasmine Neal (Clinton) as Lady in Orange, Ashanti Alexander (Tuscaloosa, AL) as Lady in Brown, Tierra Williams (Ridgeland) as Lady in Yellow, and Ashia Kendrick (Gulfport) as Lady in Green.

“We created The Unframed Series at New Stage Theatre series in 2006 to provide an alternative theatre experience to the community”, said Artist Director Francine Thomas Reynolds. “The goal of the Series is to attract theatre audiences that are interested in contemporary theatre. I am very proud of the shows that the Series has produced in the last five years.”

The series has produced current, often provocative fare such as Neil Labute’s The Shape of Things and Jeff Goode’s The Eight Reindeer Monologues. During the 2010-2011 Season Unframed also produced a variety of plays including The Last Days of Judas Iscariot by Stephen Adly Guirgis, Five Women Wearing the Same Dress by Alan Ball, and How I Learned to Drive by Paula Vogel.
